Fundraising for GrahamHaven

Hello my readers!! I am participating in the Foster Care Alumni of America 5K walk on May 26, 2018 with the Pennsylvania chapter. I am so excited to be walking for a cause as well as to spread the name of “GrahamHaven”. In case you are wondering what is “GrahamHaven”, it is a human service organization specializing in helping youths currently in foster care and young adults transitioning out of foster care.

Here is a little of my background. I have been in foster care for over 15 years. I had transitioned out of foster care successfully at the age of 21 years old. Prior to I transitioning out of foster care I had seen a lot of my peers ended up homeless with out a place to go, but to the homeless shelter. Funding for housing was very limited and was restricted to those who were favored by their Case Workers. When I was in the Independent Living program, a lot of my peers lacked proper access to physical and mental health care needs. They were not given an insurance card, instead they were only given numbers to memorized. My peers and I did not have anyone to accommodate us to our doctor appointments to advocate on our behalf. With that being said I had created a little group called “LOTS meaning Leaders of Tomorrow’s Success” to inform my peers of services that were available to them. The group only lasted until I had transitioned out of foster care. Now that I’ve grown and earned my Master’s Degree in Social Work, I still see the need to help young adults aging out of foster care. When I was a Supervisor at my previous job at a mental health facility, I carried a case load of a special population (young adults aging out of foster care). They were homeless, needed linkages in place to secure proper physical and mental health services as well as entitlements. I came up with GrahamHaven to curb homelessness among young adults aging out of foster care.

GrahamHaven will provide care coordination services to young adults transitioning out of foster care to help assist them with proper linkages to physical and mental health care, housing, entitlements, as well as job training. GrahamHaven will also provide workshops to youths currently in foster care with the goal to equip and prepare them to transition out of foster care successfully. It is very important to help our youths in care as well as young adults out of care. They need to feel loved, a sense of belonging and stability. But most importantly they need to know that there is success in life after foster care. By you donating, you are helping GrahamHaven to achieve its mission; “Providing survival skills to be successful in life after foster care”! Let us all work together as a community to help build each other up. #FosterStrong
